Allow me to explain.
Each morning, I start my day with a green smoothie made with spinach. Now, I’m not a complete health nut; I dislike most leafy greens, so I drink them mixed with delicious fruit juice!
But spinach is mostly sold pre-packaged in plastic, so this month I’ve had to make an effort to find loose-leaf spinach at supermarkets around town.

It hasn’t created too much drama so far but this week, in another #jenfail, I was disorganised and RAN OUT OF SPINACH. Disaster, I know.
I missed my green smoothie on Thursday morning, so after work I rushed to the supermarket to buy spinach. I was pressed for time. This was my one shot. One opportunity. I arrived at the salad section to find two boxes of mixed salad greens, but no loose-leaf spinach.
Eyeing the shelves of pre-bagged spinach, a thought occurred to me. A terrible thought. What if I got kale instead? It’s not bagged. And it’s kind of like spinach… right?
On Friday morning I whipped up my green smoothie and remembered why I don’t like kale. But I’ve bought it now.

Going back to last week’s column, I must confess that I had another #jenfail
You may recall I was visiting my family in Newcastle, and took my plastic alternatives when we went for coffee at the beach.
But later that day (mere hours after submitting my column) I neglected to put my reusable cutlery back into my handbag before we went out for lunch.
We had Zambreros and I had to use a plastic fork to eat my burrito bowl. I was incredibly disappointed in myself, until I saw their forks were made from compostable materials! Phew!
It is interesting that this month has not only made me more aware of how prolific plastic is, but also increased my awareness of just how many people and businesses are already working to reduce it.
