A pilot study of the Type 2 and You program was conducted by the not-for-profit primary health care organisation in 2017 with monthly groups commencing in February of this year.
Type 2 Diabetes represents about 85-90 per cent of all cases of diabetes.
According to the National Diabetes Services Scheme, people living in Western NSW have a much higher prevalence rate of diabetes than those living in metropolitan areas.
“We found that participants achieved sustainable lifestyle modifications with the group setting providing a suitable alternative to more clinical one-on-one consultations,” Marathon Health Diabetes Educator Allison Amor said.
Through the Marathon Health Clinics, clients have the option of a one on one consultation with a Diabetes Educator or Dietitian, group education sessions.
For those desiring a different approach to self-management, and a social media presence through their Let’s Talk Diabetes Facebook page.
Marathon Health Senior Diabetes Educator Lesley Wilcox said diabetes educators are working hard to ensure support is available to anyone in the community who has either been diagnosed with diabetes or has a loved one with diabetes, or is concerned about developing diabetes.
“Our Facebook page ‘Let’s Talk Diabetes’ receives a lot of positive feedback from clients and community members alike,” she said.
“It’s a judgement free, informative space where anyone can come and better understand diabetes and ask any question they may have.”
Ms Wilcox said they find clients have not had options when managing their diabetes due to their rural locations and so are working to bridge that divide and ensure better healthcare, closer to home.
Marathon Health Diabetes Educators hope their innovative approach to diabetes education, prevention and management will encourage health confidence and greater knowledge which will lead to better health outcomes for country Australians.
Diabetes Education services are offered through Marathon Health clinics in Western NSW.
