After participating in dragon boat racing for a number of years Bill and Beth Thomas were part of an enthusiastic group of dragon boat racers who were determined to bring the sport to Parkes, despite the town not having a substantial body of water.
The small steering committee announced the establishment of the Parkes Dragon Boat Club on May 3, and launched the sport at Lake Endeavour on Saturday, May 26.
Member for Orange, Philip Donato MP presented the award to the couple.
“I am delighted to be able to visit Parkes and present these awards to Bill Thomas and Elizabeth Thomas for their outstanding contribution in representing the Western Region in the Australian National Dragon Boat Championships,” Mr Donato said.
“Sport is an important part of the fabric of rural and regional New South Wales and binds our community together.”
“Well done to Bill and Elizabeth – what a great team they make.”
