The large black orpington male was on his way to a new home as the Orpington Club of Australia reported of record prices for the breed on Sunday.
The auction wrapped up the club’s national show, with judging taking place on Saturday at the showground.
The vendor of the top-priced $850 male also had a female orpington sell for the top price of $800, club secretary Martin Doulton said.
There was full clearance of the 34 lots, and Dubbo auctioneer Angus Barlow had done a great job, he said.

The champion bird of show was a black bantam cockerel, exhibited by Chris Hardman of Armidale.
Watching the action carefully was Rose Gibson, a junior exhibitor from Coffs Harbour.
Mr Doulton said Rose was the youngest, but by no means the least experienced of the group.
“She looks after her own birds, they’re monstrous things - seven or eight kilos - she cleans them and prepares them for the show,” he said.
Mr Doulton said the good news was the club had chosen to return to Dubbo, with its great venue and friendly welcome, for next year’s show.
