The action, scheduled to take place before business hours on Tuesday, is being taken in the interest of traffic and pedestrian safety, the council said.
A grey Holden Caprice travelling along Macquarie Street about 1.15am Saturday struck a tree, police said.
The tree was assessed by council staff on Monday morning and was found to have structural damage that was likely to affect its root system.
The tree removal will start from 5am and be completed by normal business hours to minimise inconvenience.
Traffic will be closed in both directions for the removal.
The council thanked residents in advance for their understanding.
A new tree of a similar species will be planted as a replacement.
