The Royal Australian Mint was in Dubbo for their latest national tour.
Royal Australian Mint communications officer Ben Beard said it had been 150 years since the last convict ship arrived in Australia. The tour was a way to share the history and folklore about some of the characters among the 162,000 who were transported.
As part of the tour, the Dubbo community was able to get their own Rascals and Ratbag coin.
“They’re a coin you won’t see in circulating currency and will only be produced on the roadshow. As soon as the roadshow’s done that coin will never be produced again,” Mr Beard said.
He said both collectors and those simply wanting to see what the colourful pop-up at the rotunda was had been buying coins.
“It’s been a great morning. All the kids came down before school to get in and get their coin before they had to rush off to school. It was great to see some young people getting involved,” Mr Beard said.
At the end of each tour the Mint looked at which new and exciting locations it could visit next time, Mr Beard said. Dubbo was chosen based on community feedback and its size.
