“The calf is very cute but she is also very strong,” elephant keeper Joel Kerr said.
“Some of her great character is that, she’s very strong and bold, you could see her leading her mum out onto the exhibit today, she’s a very interesting character.”

Taronga Western Plains Zoo first elephant calf Sabai, 18 months, “is very excited to have a little character to play with, he’s a little bit rough... he’s becoming more familiar now and becoming more respectful of her,” Mr Kerr said.
Zoo director Steve Hinks said the birth of a female Asian Elephant calf was “extremely important” to Taronga Western Plain’s Zoo’s breeding program, which contributes to the Australasian regional conservation effort to secure the species’ future.
The staff would watch the calf’s “fantastic life here at Taronga” as they anticipate her forming a new genetic bloodline in the future, Mr Hinks said.
Mr Kerr said, the calf would be an “ambassador” to her wild counterparts. “She will help educate our guests of the plight of Asian elephants in the wild, a species under threat from poaching, habitat loss and destruction” Mr Hinks said.
Mr Hinks announced a naming competition. The suggestions must have a relevant meaning and be of Thai origin. To enter visit www.taronga.org.au/namedubboelephantcalf.
