The redundancy discussions with the employers will take place on Wednesday and Thursday.
A John Holland spokesperson said the cuts were due to a lack of suitable work after the completion of the re-sleepering program.
“Our Country Rail Network team has been consulting with affected employees since early this year, communicating that the steel re-sleepering program was coming to an end,” the spokesperson said.
“The re-sleepering program was scheduled to be completed this month, and we are on track to meet that goal.
“Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to retain all our re-sleepering team because there is no other suitable work in the area. As a result, our workforce will be reduced by 36.
“We look forward to the possibility of offering more rail employment jobs in the area in the future.”

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union NSW secretary Alex Claassens said the union would be involved in the meetings and would be doing everything they could to support the workers during this difficult time.
"The funding cuts to regional rail by this NSW Government are a devastating blow to families across Dubbo. We need to invest in our regional infrastructure, not cut it,” he said.
Mr Claassens said the job losses were a direct result of the NSW government failing to invest in regional communities.
“The workers are fed up with a government that refuses to fund our regional infrastructure and local jobs,” he said.
“The NSW government continues to neglect regional jobs, leaving workers and regional communities worse off.”
The RTBU NSW secretary said he encouraged workers to consult with the union representative who would be in attendance at the meetings.
