Early signs at the prime cattle sale at Dubbo on Thursday, June 14, where agents drew for 5100 head are that the market at worst is fully firm to dearer for cows and bulls with all other descriptions stronger.

We no doubt will get a better idea as the day progresses. The good news story out of Queensland at the moment is the good rain band which has been hovering over the channel country Maranoa and Warrego District for the last day or so.
Boulia at the last bulletin had received 25 millimetres and it was still showering which is double their normal June rain and very close to the 27mm which is their normal total for all of winter. Charleville which only received a few millimetres recorded their best fall in over two months.
Store stock sales across the width and breadth of NSW are struggling for numbers as the money on offer in the physical prime cattle, sheep and lamb sales is just too good to miss.
Professional buyers both salaried and commission appear to have more options for all categories of stock at the moment. Their armoury includes processing, feed lotting, trucking to areas with grass for backgrounding thus creating an array of possibility for stock put to auction on any given day.
Meanwhile the grazier in our part of the world is mainly trying to buy expensive fodder to keep his core breeders alive so that when this drought does break the farm has something to rebuild with.
People who know me will know that I am a rusted-on saleyard seller and that Dubbo is without a doubt my preferred centre.
Having said that Paul Dakin and his auctioneer Mark Garland reported a sale from last week that I feel justifies my enthusiasm for this form of marketing and my love for Dubbo as a centre.
Ken and Debbie Newton ‘Fairview’, Coonabarabran sold a line of 480 Angus steers and heifers by Kidman Bulls.
The cattle basically 10/12 months were an outstanding representation of the breed, 260 steers average weight of 270kg sold from 317.2c/kg to 317.8c/kg.
220 Heifers similar weight range realised 274.2 to 278.2c/kg. My thanks to the agents involved and to the Newton family who are long time supporters of Dubbo Saleyards.
Remember also these prices were received earlier in the month when prices may have been a touch weaker than they are today.
Since starting the column, I have caught up with David Monk market reporter for the MLA and now have the official version of today’s results. Numbers declined by 1300 head large percentage of the yarding were cows and plain weaners.
Young cattle to the trade 8c dearer toping at 295c/kg.
