The Year 5 student was awarded the Earle and Sally Shields Perpetual Trophy for the Highest Mark in Junior Public Speaking at the Dubbo Eisteddfod on Thursday.

George's speech was on ways to make the future better, such as helping the homeless and putting rubbish in the bin. The idea came from a school excursion to Sydney, he said, where he had seen some homeless people in the park.

Since last term he has worked on writing and learning his speech.

George said he had been a little bit nervous during the public speaking solo, but was more nervous after it had finished.

Adjudicator Elizabeth Walsh said the public speaking performers had all done a wonderful job and had beautifully strong voices.
