Lachlan Carney was one of six VET and TAFE students from the region who received awards.
Mr Carney went to school in Yeoval and Wellington from kindergarten to year nine before moving to boarding school at Yanco Agricultural School in Wagga Wagga to study his VET courses.
Training Services NSW Executive Director David Collins congratulated award winners on the night.
“The quality of all finalists and winners at the Awards provided a sparkling showcase of our world class VET sector in the region and I congratulate them all,” Mr Collins said.
Mr Carney said he plans to move back to Dubbo after school and use the knowledge and skills he learnt while studying to work on his family’s farm. He also hopes to study an electrical trade when he returns.
Mr Carney’s family has owned a farm in Dubbo since 2005. He said his VET course has broadened his skills and knowledge in different and better ways of farming. His family have been farming in the Dubbo region for 56 years.
“The Training Awards pay tribute to our apprentices, students, trainees, educators and training providers from all over the state and show young people that VET is a great pathway for a rewarding career,” Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills John Barilaro said
“VET offers a strong alternative to university with graduates getting into work sooner, getting paid more on graduation, and getting training in occupations predicted to have the greatest new job growth over the next five years,” Mr Barilaro said.
“I’d recommend VET any day of the week – one of the best things I’ve ever done,” Mr Carney said.
Mr Barilaro said regional winners would be considered for selection to compete at the NSW Training Awards.
Mr Carney was trained by Public Schools NSW in Wagga Wagga and is in his final year of studying certificates in Agriculture, Electrotechnology and Metals and Engineering.
