In 2016 Ms Toomey was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through a lumpectomy, radiation and chemotherapy, however in March this year, it was discovered the cancer had returned in her bronchial tube.
Kellsey Galea, part of the organising committee of Kara’s Ultimate Fight Against Cancer, said she was blown away by how much support there was for Ms Toomey.
“It was amazing. We were absolutely blown away by the generosity of everybody in the room. Kara has helped other people so much it’s great to see the people of Dubbo giving so much back,” Ms Galea said.
“It just goes to show if you surround yourself with great people, amazing things happen.”

The money will help Ms Toomey with her medical costs. While the cancer in her bronchial tube is inoperable, Ms Toomey is taking part in a medical trial.
“Kara’s only one of three women in Australia participating in the trial and there are only 100 people in the world doing it,” Ms Galea said.
“She has to go down to Sydney three Thursdays out of every month and then she gets one week off. She only finds out on the Tuesday when she has the blood test if she can go and you know how expensive flights are when you only book them 24 hours in advance.
“We’re not 100 per cent sure if she’s getting the medication or the placebo, because that’s how the trial works. But if it’s the placebo the money will go towards further treatment and their flights.”
Ms Toomey and her husband Robert ‘Gummy’ Toomey run Pound For Pound Boxing and Fitness. Ms Gallea said the boxing community all turned out in support at Kara’s Ultimate Fight Against Cancer on Saturday night. Overall, there were more than 400 people at the event.
As well as a speech from boxing great Johnny Lewis, the night also featured an auction, with items such as signed gloves from Danny Green and a signed Michael Jordan basketball going under the hammer.
“The committee want to say thanks to everyone who turned up on the night, those who couldn’t turn up, those who donated prizes and money. We’re all blown away,” Ms Galea said.
Merchandise from the night, such as stubbie holders or caps, can be purchased from Hendersons Menswear.
