The five females and one male goat kids are settling in well to their surrounds and can often be spotted climbing on different rocks and logs in the goat kraal.
They are starting to interact with each other. As they continue to grow they will start to develop more play behaviours.
Keepers are currently bottle feeding one of the goat kids as its mother is unable to feed it.
This kid has formed a very close bond with its keepers in a short time and can often be seen following along behind them.
The recent new arrivals are set to be joined by more kids later this year with a number of other females pregnant in the herd.
The Australian Miniature Goats arrived in January 2018 from goat studs in the Southern Highlands and Hunter Valley, and have been a popular addition to the Lion Pride Lands precinct at the Zoo.
The presence of the goats in the kraal represents an important mainstay of an African Maasai village life, on which Lion Pride Lands has been modelled, and helps demonstrate how villagers live in close proximity to a top order predator.
The goat kraal is an opportunity for visitors to walk in amongst the goatherd and have a sensory experience of being in an African village.
Visitors can meet the goats and kids in the goat kraal walk-through at the new Lion Pride Lands precinct, where they have access to three yards.
Lion Pride Lands is open every day and entry is included in cost of zoo admission (Pride Lands Patrol tour costs extra).
Locals can access discounted zoo tickets and annual passes – to find out more visit taronga.org.au/dubbolocals.
Opening Hours: 9am - 4pm everyday. The entry fee includes two consecutive days’ admission, to give you ample time to explore all the Zoo has to offer. Open every day of the year, including Christmas Day.
