In 2016 Ms Toomey was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Triple Negative Breast Cancer. She went through a lumpectomy, radiation and chemotherapy. In March this year, it was discovered the cancer had returned.
Kim Scott, said time stood still as Ms Toomey and her husband Robert ‘Gummy’ Toomey heard the news.
“Not only had it returned but it was inoperable. Its official diagnosis is Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer in the right bronchial tube,” she said.
“With all conventional cancer treatments ruled out, Kara has pinned her hopes on a trial immunotherapy treatment. The expense and drain of weekly trips from their home in Dubbo to Sydney is mounting,” Ms Scott said.
The couple are the founders of the Pound For Pound Intensive Mentoring Program. Ms Scott said it was more than just a gym, it was a refuge for disadvantaged and Indigenous youth and a way for them to discover their own self-worth.
However, the family have had to travel to Sydney every three weeks for treatment, Ms Scott said, placing strain on the family.
“The Youth Programs will have to cease. The future of Pound For Pound is in jeopardy. Kara’s concern is as always more for others than herself and she is especially worried about the future education of her two sons, Rome and Cruze.”
To help the family with their medical and future costs a fundraiser has been organised for this weekend, supported by the Men of League Foundation.
The event will be held at the Dubbo RSL Memorial Club on Saturday, May 26. It will include auctions and raffles, as well as guest speaker boxing legend Johnny Lewis.
“For so many, Kara has been a source of light, a ray of hope and a giver of tomorrows. We ask now with our hearts and arms open wide to her plight that you give anything you have to ease the road to follow for this beautiful and inspiring family,” Ms Scott said.
“Kara was vehemently opposed to any assistance in her first battle but this is a war she can’t win on her own. Like Kara, be the change you wish to see in the world and give all you can to be her light, her hope and her chance for a lifetime of tomorrows.”
Men of League Western Region president Martin Cook said the organisation wanted to ensure the mentoring program would continue.
“Men of League are there to support the men, women and children from all levels of the game. Kara does a brilliant job incorporating rugby league with boxing into the Pound For Pound Intensive Mentoring Program for troubled indigenous youth, which is why the Men of League Foundation have offered their support,” Mr Cook said.
“Men of League hopes that proceeds of the night will not only ensure the Toomey family has the financial capacity to fight this cancer battle but also to ensure the mentoring program Kara has developed will continue.”
Tickets for the fundraiser can be purchased online at www.123tix.com.au. Only a limited number are available.
