The NSW government is supercharging TAFE to work with industry on the design of courses, ensuring the skills students develop “set them apart for employment in high-growth” sectors.
On Monday its new specialist facility SkillsPoint was unveiled at the Myall Street campus by minister responsible for TAFE NSW Adam Marshall and Dubbo MP Troy Grant.
At the junction of highways, and with the inland rail and new rail maintenance facility projects planned, Dubbo was a fitting place to house the facility, they said.
The $350,000 centre is one of nine SkillsPoints being rolled out across NSW, and the one with responsibility for ecommerce and supply chain logistics.
The Dubbo-based SkillsPoint has created 14 new full-time jobs in the city.
Its recruits have the brief to collaborate with businesses to design courses to be used across the TAFE NSW network.
Mr Marshall said the SkillsPoint would change TAFE’s relationship with industry, involving them in designing courses, which was “something TAFE [had] never done consistently across the state” until now.
“This new facility will work closely with industry to design and develop courses for TAFE students across the state, ensuring the skills they develop are relevant and set them apart for employment in high-growth industries such as e-commerce and supply chain logistics,” he said.
“Aligning skills training with the needs of industry will ensure our TAFE students are job-ready and able to launch or advance their career in diverse areas ranging from aviation, online business and floristry to vehicle service and repair.”
Students undertaking courses within the automotive industry were some of those in attendance.
Mr Grant said Dubbo was an obvious choice to house the facility.
“Dubbo sees more than 10 million tonnes of freight moved through the Central West and Orana by road and rail each year, and sustains 2900 transport, postal and warehousing related businesses across Western NSW,” he said.
“The Dubbo-based SkillsPoint will leverage local expertise and work closely with industry to develop cutting edge TAFE courses for the entire State.
“The SkillsPoint will also create 14 new jobs right here in Dubbo, making it an extra win for the region.”
