The aim of the competition is to provide an opportunity for producers to benchmark their lambs against the best in the business, all while generating a substantial amount of money for charities that benefit local communities.
Prime Lamb committee member David Amor said entries have come from across central west NSW to the New England area, including Dubbo, Wellington, Cowra, to Glenn Innes, Armidale and Braidwood.
“We’re expecting 90 pens of 6.. but we’re up to 80 (pens of 6) already, so we could end up with more,” he said.
Last year’s competition was an outstanding success which brought together the industry and local communities. In total 534 lambs from 46 entries represented western NSW showcasing 9 different breeds in 2017.
There were 6 different classes from the winning entries in last year’s competition who shared in prizes and prize money to the value of $25,000, all which was donated by the event’s sponsors.
Grand Champion Hoof and Hook Pen 2017 winner, Josh O’Connor ‘Lynwood’, Eumungerie said it was a great competition to be a part of.
“It’s good to get your name out there (as a commercial breeder), especially when you’re competing against the bigger studs,” he said.
In total $27,000 was raised in the charity auction from the 2017 sale of 42 lambs, two pigs and a wombat, with the money going to 19 different charities.
This year’s results and presentation, which will be held during the Dubbo Show, will be on Friday, May 11 from 3pm to 4pm, followed by the auction of donated pens of lambs.
Committee members said the event would not happen without the continued and generous support of Fletcher international Exports.
Entries close April, 27 and will be limited to 5 entries of 6 lambs per entrant.
