This is the fourth year Cancer Council NSW has held the Stars of Dubbo Dance for Cancer. It pairs up local celebrities with Dubbo dance schools to raise money towards cancer research.
“I have a daughter who’s turning nine [years-old] and I’m doing it to show her it’s okay to go out of your comfort zone. And while I’m doing that I’m raising money for a wonderful cause that maybe one day I will need. Unfortunately, to get a cure they need money,” Ms Williams said.
While initially hesitant about taking part in the idea, Ms Williams said she realised she was approaching 40 and decided to do something to push herself. To her surprise, the star said she had actually been enjoying the experience.
Ms Williams has been paired with Krystle Hayden for the performance. It was very calming knowing there was someone by your side, she said.
On the night Ms Williams said she would be having something very simple going through her head: “don’t fall over. It’s three minutes and 40 seconds you can do this”.
However, inspiring her children wasn’t the only reason Ms Williams said she had taken on the Dance for Cancer. She was given a dose of motivation during a recent fundraising barbecue.
“While we were having the barbecue we had lots of feedback about people who had been lost to cancer or had been diagnosed. It brought it home. One particular person was telling me their bosses wife had it about two years ago and she’s in remission and has since had a baby,” Ms Williams said.
“You hear these great stories about people who have been through it and they’ve gone on to survive and have their family. It was very heartwarming.”
Ms Williams said she couldn’t thank Orana Dance Centre enough for their time in teaching her.
“Being a mum myself I know we’ve all got busy lives and if it wasn’t for the dance studio and the backup dancers it wouldn’t be the show it’s going to be,” she said.
The Stars of Dubbo Dance for Cancer will be held on Saturday May, 5. Tickets are $100 per person.
