Really, it should have been taken the moment the bus stop was completed and it was realised it would be unsafe. Or better yet it should have been constructed to ensure safety was never an issue.
But the ‘death trap’ can not stay as it currently is.
Dubbo Regional councillor David Grant said he was disappointed at the lack of consideration the RMS had given to local families about a dangerous bus stop on the Golden Highway at Muronbung Road. And so he should be.
What could be more important than ensuring the safety of school children getting onto their bus? Or even the safety of a bus driver who has pulled over on one of the city’s busiest roads?
There are even concerns about the parents who need to pull up on the side of the road to drop off their kids.
All of these things should be a top priority for Roads and Maritime Services.
This is their response to the issue:
“Roads and Maritime Services is investigating concerns raised by the community about the safety of a bus stop at the Muronbung Road intersection with the Golden Highway and will keep the community and Ogdens Coaches updated as the investigation progresses.”
RMS didn’t answer questions about how long it would be or if they had heard the complaints before or what they would be doing to keep the kids who use the bus stop safe.
As Cr Grant said “to be totally honest is unsafe and it won’t be long before a major incident occurs”.
It’s no wonder the issue has been brought to the attention of Cr Grant. Even looking at the photos it’s easy to see how there would be complaints.
As well as the lack of parking suitability for the bus and the parents, there’s also the concern about the school children even getting on the bus.
“Children have been put in a position where they have to climb down and through a water channel to get to the bus stop and when they are hopping off in the afternoon the bus has to pull up on the edge of the water channel to ensure the bus is clear of the roadway,” Cr Grant said.
This bus stop is a problem that needs to be fixed immediately. No one wants to see a serious accident.
