Approximately 150 people attended the inaugural famoUS fundraiser at Dubbo’s Lazy River Estate on Saturday, February 17. The Hollywood inspired cocktail party fundraiser was held to raise money on behalf of Lifeline Central West.
While the total amount hasn’t been finalised yet, approximately $10,000 was raised on the night through an auction that included items that had all been generously donated.
The famoUS group – which consists of nine men and women from Dubbo, Wellington and Narromine – joined forces to shine a light on mental health.
Lifeline Central West executive director Alex Ferguson said he was “blown away”.
“It was a lovely night.. everyone frocked up. It was just fantastic. All of the guests were great.. everyone was just amazing..,” he said.
Some of those special guests included NSW Mental Health Commission’s deputy commissioner Fay Jackson, and former NRL footy star turned national Lifeline and RUOK Day ambassador Dan Conn.
Wellington man, Joe Mason was the emcee on the night and entertainment was provided by Pete Riley and friends. Thikkabill Vibrations did a very special cultural performance.
Mr Ferguson said sometimes topics such as mental health, or death or even cancer can become heavy, but the fundraising night was anything but.
“It was a lot of fun… And it was a night that recognised mental health problems exist right across the board,” he said.
Mr Ferguson said one of the main messages Lifeline Central West wanted to get out to the wider community was that help was never far away.
“I hope this fundraiser helps to bring the topic of mental health into mainstream conversations,” he said.
“Yes Lifeline Central West may have a busy year ahead... but the most important message we’re trying to get out is that we’re here and that help is as close as calling 13 11 14.”
Mr Ferguson said he was very humbled to be included in the first ever fundraising effort of the famoUS committee.
“And we’re responding in kind by moving into our new premises early next month,” he said.
“All the things we said were going to happen are happening and we’re being assisted by the work of the famoUS committee.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulty please don’t hesitate to give Lifeline a call on 13 11 14.
