A big crowd turned out for a good day of racing at Tuesday’s Boxing Day meeting and Barton said the club wanted another meeting that would appeal to the public, as opposed to the punters.
“This meeting is our only community race meeting we have. It’s one where a lot of people who come back to Wellington for Christmas come out and support us,” Mr Barton said.
“We’re trying to entice Racing NSW to give us a community meeting in September, which would coincide with school holidays.
“Our other meetings are TAB meetings but we like to get the locals here, whereas the TAB meetings are more for the punters. Wellington has always been a strong racing town, and it’s important to do something for the community.”
Mr Barton said if successful, he hoped the meeting would appeal to a new generation of racegoers.
