The popular weekly event will add Christmas Day to the calendar this year for the first time, with parkrunners and their family and friends to gather at Sandy Beach at 8am on Monday, December 25.
“Christmas is usually a time when people come together to spend time with family and friends, but we know that some people in our wider community will spend the festive period on their own.
“parkrun has always been about bring people together, so this year we decided to hold Dubbo parkrun on Christmas Day for everyone to participate,” Dubbo parkrun run director Karen Pellow said.
Since parkrun started local events have had the option of adding an additional Christmas Day or New Year’s Day parkrun, but it’s a first for Dubbo.
“We thought we would see if we could get the volunteers first, and then decide from there. We had the volunteers we needed within a couple of days, so we are going ahead,” Mrs Pellow said.
Dubbo parkrun is a free all inclusive 5km run or walk around the Macquarie River starting from Sandy Beach at 8am.
“If you know someone who is spending Christmas alone encourage them to come along on Christmas Day and join us. They don’t even have to participate, they could just come along for a chat and to take part in the social side of parkrun,” Mrs Pellow said.
Considering the predicted warm temperatures participants are reminded to bring a hat, sunscreen and water – it’s a great way to start your day before you enjoy all the extra Christmas pudding.
