The CYMS cricketer and footballer has been in medical facilities since the fateful day at Kennard Park in early June, but was recently shifted from Royal North Shore Hospital to a specialist rehabilitation centre in Ryde.
It was June 4 when Ryan suffered the injury in a regulation tackle during a reserve grade match between the Fishies and Wellington.
He was airlifted to Sydney, where he has been recovering since under the watchful eye of not only his medical team, but also wife Casey and parents Brian and Janelle.
A steady stream of visitors has also helped boost morale, and amazingly just a couple of weeks back, he was able to make a brief return to his home town.
“He had a mate who was getting married, so he was able to come back for a couple of nights,” older brother Shane Medley said.
“I think just being able to be in his own house for a couple of days was a big thing, but there’s still a long road ahead.
“He’s very positive though, we all are, and we now he’s doing everything he can to give himself as much chance of making a full recovery as possible.”
Ryan’s core strength has continually grown through exercise, and a little bit of movement has returned to his hips.
He has limited use of his hands, but enough to get around in his wheelchair. And there are options available to help that should the need arise.
“He’s spoken to a neurosurgeon about some surgery that can help his hands but that’s down the track,” Shane said.
“His goal, and it has been all along since this happened, has been to get every ounce of recovery out himself and be as independent as he can be through his own hard work.
“If anything needs to be done after that to get a little bit more out of the recovery, then so be it, but he’s doing an amazing job.”
The Dubbo community has banded together amazingly over the past five months to fundraise for Ryan, meaning the bills at home continue to get paid.
Another event is being planned for mid-December, with further details to be released soon.
