While impressing as part of the Raiders’ National Youth Competition (NYC) under 20s side, Van Dartel was also setting himself up away from the game by working as a teacher’s aide.
That hard work led him to win the career and education award at the club’s Meninga Medal awards night recently.
"I really enjoy going to work and having that balance with football," he told the Raiders’ official website.
"It's obviously very important to have a backup career and something to fall back on once your playing days are finished."
The season brought an end to Van Dartel’s under 20s career.
“I absolutely loved it. It’s been a really good experience but mostly I’m thankful for the friends I’ve made a long the journey.”
