Myrniong Rocket lived up to his name at Bathurst’s Kennerson Park on Monday.
The talented two-year-old, trained by Wellington’s Brad O’Neil, blitzed the Ladbrokes Monthly Medal Sprint Series Heat (307 metres) to claim his seventh win in just 14 career starts.
The winning time of 17.49 for Myrniong Rocket ($3) was just .13 of a second away from Entrust’s 2012 track record.
It was a welcome return to the winner’s circle after Myrniong Rocket finished third in last Thursday’s Ladbrokes Live Play Stakes (318m) at Dubbo’s Dawson Park.
Monday’s race was effectively won in the opening strides when Myrniong Rocket got away beautifully from box eight.
The inexperienced Tony Taro ($4.80) showed he will be one to watch in the future as he was the only contender who could keep up with O’Neil’s runner.
Myrniong Rocket had a two length lead on Tony Taro at the halfway mark while the rest of the field was a further five metres off the pace.
However, the Rocket was packed with afterburners, and on the home straight he pushed the gap out to 4.5m on the winning post.
Spring Shanghai ($15) won the battle for third.
“He’s going brilliant. I can’t fault him with seven wins from 14 starts, and now 12 placings,” O’Neil said of his winner.
“Down the track I’ll move him up in distance, but at the moment he can stay at the 300m.”
Both Myrniong Rocket and Tony Taro have qualified for next Monday’s final at Kennerson Park.
