Cr Drew died suddenly on Tuesday afternoon.
Narromine Shire mayor Craig Davies plans to read a statement at Wednesday’s scheduled council meeting.
“It is with deep regret that I acknowledge and announce the sudden death of our fellow councillor and colleague, Cr Peter Drew,” Cr Davies said in his official statement.
“I wish to express the deepest sympathy of all the councillors and staff to Cr Drew’s wife Vicki, his family and friend and acknowledge the high regard in which his fellow councillors held him.”
Messages of sympathy have featured on Cr Drew’s Facebook page.
Cr Davies said staff and councillors are trying to come to terms with the newly elected councillor’s death.
He said plans are being made for a formal memorial service for Cr Drew in the near future.
The council have made the difficult decision to proceed with this evening’s scheduled meeting.
“There has been great to debate as to whether we should continue today, with this council meeting, however knowing Pete as I did with his resilience and persistent nature I believe it is the only way to honour his passing,” Cr Davies said.
Cr Davies will be giving a formal statement and tribute to Cr Drew at the meeting at 4.30pm this afternoon.
