He was one of more than 80 entrants to take part in the 41st annual Toyota Nationals held in the city.
The two-day event included a show and shine at Ollie Robbins Oval on Saturday morning and a motorkhana at Dubbo Regional Livestock Markets later that day.
On Sunday the roar of the engines moved to Bodangora as enthusiasts competed in drag racing along the airstrip.
Toyota Nationals event coordinator David McNeill said Yates had brought two cars - his old AE86 and his new GT86.
“Everyone loves to see him,” Mr McNeill said.
“He came again because he loved the event last year.”
Mr McNeill said the event attracted more than 80 entrants, and together with their families made about 250 visitors to Dubbo.
Many came from Newcastle, Sydney and Canberra, and a couple from South Australia and Queensland.
“Everyone treats it like an annual holiday, it’s like a big family get-together,” he said.
