Bourke Police Station cat Splashe gains international admirers

A rookie police cat’s fame is spreading across the globe as he helps officers fight crime in a western NSW town.

It’s been a big few weeks for PC Splashe, who not only found a home at the Bourke station, but also admirers from near and far.

Senior Constable Belinda Hurst reported the story of their adoption of the stray young cat had received an extremely positive response on Darling River Local Area Command’s Facebook page.

“People from as far as the USA and the Netherlands have left comments, one of his posts reaching over 20,000 views,” she said.

“Another exciting development was his story being shared by Cosmopolitan Australia, which really surprised us.

“We are pleased that this story is having such a positive effect on the general public.”

As his reputation grows, the new recruit has been settling into his duties.

PC Splashe keeps officers company day and night, and provides a warm welcome to visitors.

“[Last week], he may have extended his friendship a bit too far when he attempted to climb into the Corrective Services Prisoner Van, luckily he was rescued by an officer before the van left for Dubbo,” Senior Constable Hurst said.

“Splashe spent some time assisting with some lost property in the miscellaneous property room, and Splashe quickly learnt the hard way that some rooms are out of bounds.

“On Wednesday two representatives from the Police Bank came to Bourke Station, PC Splashe gave them a warm welcome, and in true PC Splashe style he was happy to pose for a photo (or two) with the bank mascot ‘Dynamo’.”

A young and hungry black cat, Splashe turned up at the Bourke Police Station earlier this year and his fortunes changed.

Officers chipped in to pay for his food, vet bills, bed and toys.

With help from the community, the ‘Bourke Police Station Cat’ was named Splashe, a name inspired by local product Splashe Cola.

The announcement of his name prompted a stream of best wishes via social media.
