After what seemed to be a routine trip to doctor in November, Kailem, 17, was later diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a very rare form of bone cancer.
Kailem's father, Tony, said the relatively uncommon disease affected mainly children and adolescents and occurred in only 1 per cent of childhood cancers.
Since leaving school, Kailem joined his father in the family plastering business, which has now all been put on hold to get through 14 stages of intense chemotherapy at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
"His treatment plan is to have chemotherapy every three weeks for three days over six sections," Mr Barwick said.
"After that he will require an operation to remove his second right rib and the surrounding tissue."
But, it doesn't finish for Kailem after the operation, Mr Barwick said, he would then be put through another eight rounds of chemotherapy to "mop up" the disease.
The close-knit family have turned to the Dubbo community in order to give their son and brother the best chance of fighting off the cancer.
After a suggestion from friends, the Barwicks decided to hold a fundraising event at the Commercial Hotel on Brisbane Street from 6pm on Friday, March 27.
The family is asking for donations of value to be used in the evening's auction.
"Dubbo's always been a supportive community to people when times are tough and we're hoping people will get on board with us," Mr Barwick said.
