SHE may not have appeared in the main event of the Black Money fight night but Lauryn Eagle was the main drawcard and did not disappoint with a clinical points-decision win over Nicki Bigwood in their six-round contest on Friday night.
An interrupted preparation didn't stop the former waterskiing champion, who took a unanimous points decision over the Kiwi fighter, with the bout scored 60-54, 60-54, 59-55 in her favour.
"I'm very happy with that," she said after the victory.
"I was a bit hesitant coming in with my preparation not as good as normal. I had about two or three weeks plus I started my own bootcamps a month ago so I've been up at 4am and feeling exhausted."
Eagle's movement and speed troubled Bigwood throughout but she admitted she didn't have it all her own way as the Kiwi challenger put in a powerful performance, especially in the last 10 seconds of each round when Bigwood really lifted her intensity.
"Not at all," she said. "I really wanted to pace myself as well. At the start I just wanted to suss her out because she came in a bit heavy and looked like she'd been at the gym trying to burn off a bit of weight so I thought I'd rather be safe than sorry."
Eagle went on to say the recent early starts for the fitness bootcamps had taken their toll but she was pleased with her performance and admitted she had a bit left in the tank afterwards.
"I slept pretty much until 5pm this afternoon I was so exhausted, so I'm very happy with that," she said.
"I gave it probably about 80 per cent, I still had a little bit left but didn't want to use that."
After her seventh win from 11 professional fights Eagle said she hoped to have a much better lead-in to her next bout, a fight on the Anthony Mundine-Shane Mosley undercard on October 23 at Sydney's Entertainment Centre.
"It was a blessing in disguise really," she said of the poor preparation.
"I've learnt a lot from that. Sometimes I can think I'm Superwoman and I can do everything but I learnt I'm not and boxing is a serious sport.
"You need to make sure you put 110 per cent in and I'll make sure I do that for the next one."
After hearing the support of a raucous crowd throughout her fight Eagle also took time to praise first-time promoter Matt Rose and said she had enjoyed being part of the Black Money night at Dubbo.
"It's fantastic," she said.
"It's been amazing to fight on Matt's card and I think he's got some great fighters, especially Sam Ah-See.
"It was only a small amount of fights but with Naughty By Nature here for the after-party it's a great contrast and he put on a great show."
