After missing the first four weeks of the ANFD Cup due to forfeits against them, the Rhinos played their first match of the season last Saturday and were beaten 76-7 by Mudgee Wombats.
In the lead-up to the match the Rhinos sent out a scathing media release indicating that Central West Rugby intended to get rid of them altogether. The release was also critical of the forfeits from Wellington, Coolah, Coonabarabran and Trangie.
But Redbacks president Dave Grant returned fire in a letter to the editor, which has been published in today's Daily Liberal.
"I would like to clarify that the Wellington Redbacks Rugby Union club had no choice but to forfeit our game against Dubbo Rhinos in the first round of the ANFD Northern Conference Cup," the letter says.
"In a joint effort between the junior and senior Wellington Rugby Clubs, and in collaboration with a local Wellington family, a rugby charity day had been organised for Saturday, April 6, 2013, to raise money for the McGrath Foundation."
Grant goes on to say the charity day, which was planned around the bye the Redbacks had in the original ANFD Cup draw, raised more than $10,000.
