Veteran stayer Generous Huka and handy sprinter Superbad will both line up in the $15,000 Peter Walkom Memorial (1205m) fresh from a stint of racing in the South Australian town of Port Lincoln.
Both runners are owned by Monaghan and her partner, Sky Channel tipster Tim Moses, and both have more than paid their way during the past few years.
“We paid $600 for Generous Huka and he’s won almost $100,000 and we got Superbad for free and he’s won 10 races and about $80,000,” Moses said.
“I’m not sure how they will both go on Sunday. It’s too short for Generous Huka but we have to start him off somewhere after the trip back from Port Lincoln.
“Superbad is the pick of them in this race. He goes OK at Dubbo and the race he won there a couple of years ago he beat Izababe and at the time he was the only horse to have beaten Izababe so he’s got a bit of ability.”
Seven of Superbad’s wins have come at Port Lincoln, including a four-race winning streak in 2012.
While Sunday’s race features some classy runners including Sutton Queen, Hewentwhoosh and Pennyforyathoughts, Moses believes his runner has a fluker’s chance of figuring in the finish.
“There’s some real good horses there,” he said.
“Sutton Queen is the class animal in the race but Pennyforyathoughts goes quick and will lead for a long way.
“Generous Huka will be back in the field and he’ll hit the line but I think Superbad will probably find a good spot just off the speed from gate six and he’ll be around the money somewhere.”
Meanwhile, Scone trainer Luke Griffith has bypassed today’s $50,000 Queen Of The North Handicap (1200m) at Port Macquarie to start Sutton Queen in Sunday’s race
The mare, a winner of seven races, will carry 58 kilograms at Dubbo and will be ridden by champion hoop Greg Ryan.
While Sutton Queen received 62 kilograms in the Queen Of The North the mare has also been struggling to recapture the form that saw her run in some good races last year.
“She hasn’t hit her straps yet,” Griffith said.
“They gave her a bit of weight at Port Macquarie. She’s not up to racing in some of those Group 2 races but gets too much weight in the other lesser races out in the bush.
“Dubbo could be a good start for her. Hopefully she will run well and find some form.”
