TRADING
THE SKINNY: Started the period as a major player to lure Kurt Tippett home, but soon realised the big Adelaide forward was leaning towards Sydney. The Lions then shifted their focus to a midfielder, securing former Melbourne best and fairest Brent Moloney, a restricted free agent. The Lions also interviewed Demons ruckman Stefan Martin, who had a year left on his contract, and had to wait until the last minute to resolve a stalemate in negotiations. The 25-year-old will reunite with Moloney in a deal that sent picks 53 and 73 to Melbourne.
VERDICT: The Lions had craved Tippett as the man to build their forward line around when Jonathan Brown retires. Moloney, though, adds to their midfield depth and the Lions will hope he can return to his form of 2011.
DRAFT PICKS: 8, 24, 33, 91, 109, 127
NATIONAL DRAFT
8. SAM MAYES (North Adelaide, 18, 187cm, 78kg)
Medium-sized forward blessed with some handy attributes: speed, agility and a good set shot for goal. Played senior games for the Roosters in 2012.
23. MARCO PAPARONE (East Fremantle, 18, 193cm, 84kg)
Tall forward whose elite endurance allows him to keep presenting or play in the midfield. Dangerous and creative around goal.
32. MICHAEL CLOSE (North Ballarat Rebels, 18, 195cm, 82kg)
Strong-marking forward noted for his mobility and endurance, which gives him time around the ground as a back-up ruckman.
86. JACK CRISP (Brisbane Lions, 19, 190cm, 83kg)
The young midfielder is elevated off the rookie list to the Lions' primary list.
99. NIALL McKEEVER (Brisbane Lions, 23, 196cm, 95kg)
The Irishman is rewarded for 19 games in the past two seasons by being elevated off the rookie list.
PRE-SEASON AND ROOKIE DRAFTS
Nick Hayes (No.6, rookie), Callum Bartlett (No.21, rookie), Jordon Bourke (No.56, rookie)
The Lions were prepared to punt on having another look at Bartlett after a couple of serious knee injuries. They also bolstered their on-ball brigade through Hayes, and in the ruck through Bourke, the son of former Brisbane player Damian.
