The car was suspiciously lit about 16km north of Parks around 10.40pm. The car fire then sparked a grass fire in the area.
Police were travelling along the Newell Highway when they came across the silver Honda Accord on fire.
Officers attempted to extinguish the fire but were unable to control it before it spread to nearby grass, shrubs and trees.
The Newell Highway was closed with Rural Fire Service volunteers and local land owners managing to extinguish the fire with no property damaged.
Approximately two hectares of grassland were burnt out as a result of the fire.
Police from Lachlan Local Area Command are investigating the fire and have established the 1991 model Honda was stolen from Margaret Street, Dubbo, about 5pm yesterday.
They are attempting to identify those responsible for the theft and torching of the car and urge anyone with information to come forward.
