In Dubbo and surrounding areas tops of 40 degrees are expected on Saturday and the following Wednesday while temperatures in Bathurst and Orange will 36 degrees and 34 degrees on Saturday respectively.
A high fire danger rating has been issued for all areas in the Central West. For latest warnings visit the NSW Rural Fire Service website.
The heat wave is being described by meteorologists as a ‘once in 20-30 year occurrence’.
''We have a major heat event under way,'' Bureau of Meterology manager Karl Braganza said.
''There are not many instances in the historical record where you get a heat event covering such a large area of the continent.''
The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted the heatwave would be just a taste of the summer to come saying 2013 will see above average temperatures.
