Benjamin Ryan pleaded not guilty when he appeared in Dubbo Local Court via audiovisual link from Wellington Correctional Centre.
Magistrate Andrew Eckhold set the matter down for hearing on April 11.
Police opposed an application for bail, citing Ryan's long history of contravening apprehended violence orders.
Ryan's solicitor said he was not assisted by his record.
"He wants to reside in Dubbo and would report to police as often as required,'' the solicitor said.
"He would not approach the alleged victim or witnesses.''
Police said daily reporting would be required.
Magistrate Eckhold set a self-surety of $200.
"Bail is about protecting the community and ensuring you turn up to court,'' he said.
"You had a bad record of domestic violence.''
Police allege the assault occurred in Dubbo at 6.30pm on October 13.
