MALCOLM Naden, one of Australia's most wanted fugitives, has been captured west of Gloucester.
A senior police source told the Herald no one was injured when they moved in on the armed and dangerous man in rugged bushland on the NSW north coast.
2. 'PLANE' LUCKY: pilot and passenger walk away from crash
GOOD training and state-of-the-art equipment saved the lives of two Dubbo men who walked away from a light plane crash near Gilgandra.
Pilot John Nixon and passenger Tom Warren were standing next to the wreckage of a Cirrus SR22-G3 single-engine, four-seater aircraft when rescue responders arrived on the scene at Leeches Creek Road, 10km south of Gilgandra, about 2.30pm on Wednesday.
3. Man dies in tragic street racing accident
A street race in Dubbo has ended in tragedy after two vehicles crashed leaving one driver dead and the other in a critical condition.
The fatal incident occurred around 11.50pm Saturday night and involved a 20-year-old male driver and 19-year-old male passenger in a white Holden Statesman and a 20-year-old male driver behind the wheel of a white Mistubishi FTO.
4. Five left trapped
EMERGENCY services personnel worked for several hours to extricate five people trapped in two vehicles following a head-on collision 21 kilometres west of Dubbo yesterday.
Police said a Holden Barina travelling from Dubbo to Narromine and an eastbound Mitsubishi Lancer collided on a bend on the Mitchell Highway.
5. A lost friend
POLICE have released the name of the young Dubbo man tragically killed in a street race on Saturday night as 20-year-old William Perrott.
Tributes have flowed onto the Facebook page of Mr Perrott as friends learned of his death.
Mr Perrott died on the scene of the fatal incident after having lost control of his white Holden Statesman and crashed into a tree on Brisbane Street.
6. Gifted teacher, Ellen Lawler, mourned by all
THE family of Ellen Lawler has thanked emergency personnel and Dubbo Base Hospital staff in the wake of her sudden death.
Ellen, a gifted special education teacher at Dubbo Public School, suffered a “bleed to the brain” at her Dubbo home on Tuesday morning and died in hospital that evening.
7. Truck crash closes Newell north of Dubbo
POLICE are investigating a serious crash involving two trucks about five kilometres north of Dubbo.
About 6.45pm on Wednesday evening police and other emergency services were called to a section of the Newell Highway, following reports of an incident involving two trucks.
8. SHUT DOWN: fruit seller told by council to pack up and never return
A FRUIT stall has been a popular stop for motorists on Cobra Street who purchased 45 kilograms of tomatoes and 15 kilograms of mandarins and oranges a day until Dubbo City Council told Dennis Crowley to pack up and never return.
Mr Crowley said the order came from the council without warning or a clear explanation.
Mr Crowley told the Daily Liberal he was frustrated he was not allowed to sell his produce.
9. Building up expectations
The Kosseris family has set about saving Dubbo’s CBD with plans to build a $100 million shopping, office and accommodation complex in Macquarie Street.
The development - yet to gain approval from Dubbo City Council - is promising about 400 construction jobs and another 400 jobs created on its completion at the end of 2013.
10. Tragedy on the Macquarie River
A 76-year-old Wellington man has died after drowning in the Macquarie River on Saturday evening.
His body, found by NSW Police divers from Sydney, was retrieved about 10 kilometres from Geurie, off Terrabella Road, at 1pm yesterday.
According to police, the elderly man was not wearing a life jacket, and was caught in the current of the river at about 5:30pm Saturday night.
