A police officer who smelt smoke in the early hours of Monday morning and went outside Bourke Police Station to investigate discovered that playground equipment in the town's Central Park was on fire.
Fire and Rescue NSW personnel extinguished the blaze but the playground equipment suffered extensive damage, including a slide that had partially melted.
A spokesperson for Darling River Local Area Command said the fire was believed to have been deliberately lit and anyone with information about how it might have started is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
