Katherine Russell was appalled at the theft and put a warning up on a Dubbo Facebook page to alert others.
She said the loss of the Santa cut-out, which was bolted to a fence, was particularly hard because it had been made by her children, now in their 20s, when they were five and six.
The family, who used to live in Sydney, said they had had Christmas decorations stolen in the past, but did not expect it to happen at Dubbo.
"We live in a cul-de-sac in Keswick Estate and we've narrowed the theft down to occurring around midday Saturday, so they've done it in broad daylight," she said.
"I can't believe they would take something that's for children, for Christmas."
Other residents on the Facebook page, Dubbo Crime Reports, also expressed outrage and disgust at the theft. Mrs Russell wanted to let the community know there were "low-lifes" circulating so people could be more vigilant in keeping an eye on their decorations, especially if they were sentimental, as in the case of her family's.
