About The Office Of General Counsel: Australian Catholic University Limited (Corporation) is a public university funded by the Australian Government and operates as a company limited by guarantee. The Corporation was established under the repealed Companies (Victoria) Code and its activities are now regulated by the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission Act 2012 (Cth). These characteristics make the University largely unique in the higher education sector in that it operates across local, state and federal law and in the context of Canon law from time to time. The Office of General Counsel (OGC) plays an important operational and strategic role within the University, and it was formed to maximise the quality of decision making and to mitigate legal risks for the Corporation in the context of the day to day operations of the University. For the purposes of providing independent legal advice to ACU as a corporation, upon instructions from stakeholders across all nine Australian and international campuses, the OGC is a discrete and independent functional unit directly accountable to the Vice-Chancellor and President (the Chief Executive Officer) and the Chief Operating Officer (the Corporation Secretary) who in turn report to the Senate. The OGC provides expert legal advice and services to University management and staff across a broad range of legal issues, has oversight functions in terms of the University's broader strategic activities, and informs stakeholders of relevant legal developments. About the role: As the National Manager, Legal Services you will be a senior lawyer in the OGC to provide specialised advice and legal services to key stakeholders, to facilitate the management of complex, sensitive and high-risk legal matters in a timely and cost-effective manner. You will also be leading a small team of legal specialists whilst providing management support to the General Counsel. More specifically the role entails: Drafting bespoke legal agreements and documents, and providing expert legal advice to key management and stakeholders Managing case loads and workflow process across the legal team Managing a small team of legal professionals. You will need to have: Completion of a law degree with subsequent extensive relevant post qualification experience in a broad range of legal areas, including contracts/commercial; or an equivalent combination of extensive relevant experience and/or post-graduate education/training. Current unrestricted Australian Practising Certificate conferring admission to practice as an Australian legal practitioner or an entitlement to immediately obtain an unrestricted Australian practising certificate. Demonstrated ability to provide strategic legal advice and stakeholder centric services in an ethical, independent and impartial manner in relation to complex, high-value and high risk matters across multiple Australian jurisdictions. Extensive demonstrated front-end experience in negotiating and drafting a wide range of contracts including a demonstrated ability to draft bespoke agreements without the use of precedents. Demonstrated ability to work constructively and collaborate with a range of key internal stakeholders including members of senior University management, along with external stakeholders including lawyers, project managers, consultants and contractors across a wide range of projects and initiatives in multiple Australian jurisdictions. Experience working as an in-house legal counsel for a non-for-profit entity and/or in the higher education sector is desirable.
