Brewarrina had the highest death rate in NSW, with 11 deaths per 1000 in 2011, while Bourke had a death rate of 10.6.
The figures are contained in the Australian Bureau of Statistics Deaths, Australia, 2011 report. It compared death rates for local government areas (LGA) in Australia using standardised death rates, which enable the comparison of populations with different age groups.
The standardised death rate was lowest in Australia's major cities, with 5.6 deaths per 1000 standard population, and highest in very remote areas (8.2).
The statewide figure for NSW in 2011 was 5.7, slightly above the figure for all of Australia (5.6). The NT had the highest rate (7.3 deaths per 1000 standard population), while the ACT had the lowest at 5.1. Dubbo also had a standardized death rate above the NSW average with 6.1.
There were 307 deaths recorded in the LGA in 2011 from a population of 40,491. In the past five years, this rate has fluctuated between 5.6 (2009) and 6.9 (2006). Other western NSW centres with death rates above the NSW average for 2011 included Wellington (8.7), Walgett (8.5), Gilgandra (7.7), Coonamble and Narromine (7.6), Warren (6.7) and Cobar (6.0).
