CYMS got away to a flyer, leading 22-0, and seemed to have all the running before the Raiders hit back with two converted tries before drinks.
Yeo said 30 minutes of quality football isn’t good enough.
“That first 20 minutes was ideal but then some ill discipline crept in and got scrappy in the things we did before half-time and they scored two tries,” Yeo said.
“We need to work on our discipline and concentrate on doing the small things right. They’re a good bunch of kids and their attitude is good so I’m looking for improvement at every opportunity.
“We [will] look back on this game as the one we won and played 36 minutes of good football. We’ll work on that and hopefully play better over a longer period against Wellington next up.”
Half-back Jason Boney had a great win for CYMS and directed play while scoring a try and kicking four goals; while Billy Sing at lock was good and also crossed; and Ben Marlin’s work and vision at dummy-half was a major factor for the winning side.
Macquarie coach Greg Edwards was pleased with the comeback by his Raiders who were shell-shocked into reality after the opening minutes.
“Unfortunately we didn’t control the football but they’re a relatively inexperienced group of kids and there’s a lot of improvement in them,” he said.
“Our defence wasn’t all that solid and we paid for that as well.
“When you let a side like CYMS play their brand of football then you’re going to be up against it. Their big guns really hurt us.”
Edwards was more than pleased with the efforts of five-eighth Swade Dunn - the Western Rams under-18s utility back.
“Swade was our best by a long way,” the coach said.
Jahryd Usher in the centres and second-rower Kieran Hill also impressed Edwards.
The Raiders performance wasn’t helped by head injuries to half-back Josh Ferguson and lock Daniel Buckingfield, both who required stitches.
In the other three under-18s games played Sunday, defending premiers Parkes beat Narromine 26-22 scoring five tries to three while Forbes beat Nyngan 24-18 in a good game and Cobar got the points over Wellington 26-14.
Winger Jacob Davies and hooker Jake O’Brien both scored two tries for Parkes while five-eighth Ethan Sheedy was one of Narromine’s best with two tries and three goals.
Cobar Roosters will be looking to five-eighth David Watson this season and he really stood up on Sunday against the Cowboys scoring two tries and kicking five goals in an impressive performance.
The Cowboys will now regroup and are certain to be stronger when they play at home against CYMS this weekend.
Rarely does a year go by without Forbes having a good under-18s team and they’ve got points on the board after scoring five tries to three against Nyngan.
Centre Jarrod Shaw scored a double for Nyngan and was one of their best.
Second round games this week see Macquarie at home to Forbes at Apex Oval; Narromine and Nyngan at Cale Oval; CYMS travel to Kennard Park and Parkes host Cobar.
n Dubbo CYMS 32 (CJ Ralph, Zac London, DJ Gordon, Jason Boney, Brendan Potbury, Billy Sing tries; Boney 4 goals) defeated Macquarie Raiders 24 (Swade Dunn 2, Jai Dunn, Luke Kennedy tries, Swade Dunn 3, Jai Dunn goals).
