Living Black video journalist Larteasha Griffen was welcomed into the home of the family two weeks ago to interview the family who are searching for answers since Ms Nolan went missing in early 2005.
The interest in the disappearance of Ms Nolan significantly intensified after various sightings and the eventual capture of her fugitive cousin Malcolm Naden in March. It has been reported Naden is helping police with their investigation into Ms Nolan’s disappearance. The excavation search of Butlers Falls by police in recent days has again drawn attention back to the case. Miss Griffen said she was “trying to find the real Lateesha” with the intimate family story.
“I spent a lot of time with them, they were so welcoming considering the circumstances,” she said.
“They opened their doors to us and we really appreciate that.”
The close-knit family returns to the location where Ms Nolan’s car was found abandoned on January 4 every year.
Balloons with messages and poems are released as the family hopes to find out what happened to Miss Nolan.
“They don’t have a place to go to so that is what they do,” Miss Griffen said.
“They will never forget what kind of person Lateesha is.”
While spending time with the family Miss Griffen heard stories of Ms Nolan’s childhood, describing a sporty girl who loved the outdoors.
“They do everything together, they told me of the many camping trips they had with Lateesha,” she said.
“She was adventurous as a child and when the family went camping she was the first one of the cousins who took off on the motorbike.”
These are some of the many memories the family tells Ms Nolan’s “very lovely and outgoing” children Jayden, Keisha, Shaqkaila and Erica.
“They are told a lot about their mum from aunties, cousins and grandmother,” Miss Griffen said.
Living Black featuring the story Nolan Mystery will be aired on SBS on April 15 at 4.30pm.
