The pair of two-year-olds collected the major prize money in the New Year’s Trophy Final (516m) and the earlier Mick’s Mowers and Chainsaws Stakes (605m).
Irinka Luca ($1.30) was a firm favourite in the New Year’s Trophy Final, having qualified in an impressive 30.39 seconds the previous week at Dubbo.
The 27-month-old youngster was only marginally slower in the final, winning in 30.41s by seven-and-a-quarter lengths to Elite Madam, with Fromarge a further two lengths back in third.
In race five earlier in the day, Irinka Gabby ($3.70) won by eight-and-a-half lengths in a time of 35.24s over the slightly longer distance. Moonshine Shadow was second and Patrick Stirling third.
Raymond ‘Jack’ Smith said Luca and Gabby are the Irinka kennel’s only two runners at the moment and both had continued their impressive form of 2011.
Irinka Gabby now has six wins to her name, with two victories at Dubbo along with wins at Bulli and Wentworth Park amongst others.
Gabby’s next start is not known at this stage but Smith said he and Maree had nominated Irinka Luca at Bathurst Greyhound Club’s meeting next Monday (race 8, number 6).
Smith said 2011 was a good year for the Forbes trainers despite the premature death of their sire Irinka Dennis, who had to be put down after developing a cancerous tumour.
“Last year was very good, I can’t complain,” he said.
“Luca and Gabby went well and we also had a few others in the litter that won, but we’ve now sold them on to other trainers. We sold a couple to China and a couple to Tasmania.”
