The beautiful Shoyoen Gardens, the new Sensory Gardens and the Elizabeth Park Biodiversity Garden are some of Dubbo’s free attractions.
The Shoyoen Gardens were established in 2002 and gifted to Dubbo by sister city Minokamo in Japan. After nearly 10 years the garden is well established and contains a variety of plant species, a traditional Japanese tea house, a dry stone garden and a koi fish pond.
The recently completed Sensory Garden has a variety of fragrant plant species and is designed to appeal to the five senses with tactile surfaces and a visually appealing layout. A highlight is the carved sandstone gecko. The entrance to the garden is currently via the Shoyoen Garden (so don’t be put off by the closed entrance gates.)
The well-designed Biodiversity Garden is home to a variety of native grasses, it also contains a wetland, a woodland and a range of threatened species and is well worth a look.
The Moore family from the Hawkesbury River area were taking advantage of the gardens in Elizabeth Park yesterday and agreed that it was great that Dubbo had free attractions to take the family along to.
Heath Moore said with three children and accommodation costs to consider, it was a bonus that places like Elizabeth Park were free of charge.
“The kids love it here and we’ve also taken them to the skate park this morning.
“What a great idea that is, we don't have anything like that where we live,” he said.
Mr Moore said he bought the family to Dubbo to celebrate Corey’s birthday at the zoo,
“It was a great day,” he said.
