The National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) last week made calls for governments at all levels to work together to stamp out "dodgy" solar installers, and to protect consumers following official government figures that show many installations as dangerous.
The Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator has confirmed after they conducted safety inspections, 4 per cent were deemed unsafe and 20 per cent found to be dangerous.
Dubbo solar companies Active Solar and Gas and Clean N Free Solar have spoken of the importance of quality rather than price when choosing the best solar panels for a home.
Active Solar and Gas manager Jason Farr said as far as he was aware, the incorrect installation of solar panel systems is one of the biggest concerns for the electrical industry.
"When wiring, the polarised circuit breaker’s current must flow in the correct direction through the disruption cage within the circuit breaker," he said.
Mr Farr said getting this wrong can have the potential to cause the circuit breaker to fail, and in worst case scenarios cause the circuit breaker to meltdown and this could potentially lead to a fire.
"Ensuring the company has the correctly qualified staff, who are able to answer all your questions and gives you the proper system performance ... is the best safe guard," he said
Clean N Free solar consultant Michael Duffy said when shopping around for solar panels, those with a higher standard is the better option.
"(They) of course can be more expensive, but it’s definitely something you need if you want a better return on investment," he said.
"The panels are designed for the product to be more efficient in our climate rather than a cheaper product that further on down the track could cause problems such as a fire.
"We educate before we sell. Our aim is to ensure our customers get the best quality service with fully-licensed electricians to efficiently install solar panels in the appropriate climate."
