The pair, who have lived in Dubbo since 1990, met when they where young as their fathers where friends.
“Our fathers both worked on the railway at Nyngan,” Ron said.
Working on the railway as a train driver was to become Ron’s profession, where he worked with his father-in-law, while Elaine was to give her career, as a Telstra phone operator, away to be married.
“Then she was put off because in those days when you got married you lost your job,” Ron said.
The couple, who had been dating for two years, were married in front of more than 100 guests travelling to attend on the hot October day.
“We were married in Nyngan and we had our reception at the golf club, which I was secretary of at the time,” Ron said.
While living out at Nyngan, the couple had two sons Barry and Darren.
“It was a great country life,” Elaine said.
Barry, the eldest son, now lives in Gosford with his wife and two sons Christopher and Jake and works as a banker.
Their youngest son Darren, a businessman, lives in Sydney.
It was Ron’s 42-year career as a train driver, which ultimately led the married couple moving to Dubbo.
“They closed the railway in Nyngan and Ron was transferred to Dubbo,” Elaine said.
This move to Dubbo turned out to be most timely as it was just a short time before the disastrous Nyngan floods of 1990 that required the whole town to be evacuated.
“We lived there all our life but sold our house and left eight weeks before that flood washed Nyngan away,” Ron said.
“You wouldn’t believe how lucky you could be.”
Retiring in July1998 the couple has been spending time enjoying life, which includes their great passion, golf.
Tonight the Pusell’s will commemorate their golden anniversary with other guests on the last day of the Australian Postal Institute carnival held in Dubbo before travelling to celebrate with family.
