DDSA publicity officer, Chris Ambler said this was an exciting opportunity for the game in Dubbo and will develop the skills of young players and maintain their interest in the game.

“There are many benefits for children through playing small sided games at any age,” he said.

“Players are likely to kick the ball more often and because they play on a smaller field, all players are much more involved in the game.

“This helps build players’ skills and boost their self-esteem as they all feel they have made a valuable contribution.”

The changes are based on research finding that more than 85 per cent of children preferred playing soccer on smaller fields.

“There is also no goalkeeper in under-5 to under-7s, so no player is left out of play for extended periods nor are they struggling to master this specialised position at a young age,” Ambler said.

“Under-5s, -6s and -7s will have teams of four on the field, with two replacements and under-8s and -9s will have seven on the field with a goalkeeper and up to three replacements and field sizes will be the same as last year.

“In the under-10 age group the teams will play across half a full-sized field with nine players including a goalkeeper and up to three replacements.

“Goal sizes will be reduced so that young keepers are not having to cover a full seven metre wide goal. Small Sided Football is being implemented up to under-10s across NSW this year so that all associations in Australia are playing the same format from under-5s through to 10s.”

Players new to soccer are welcome to register at the soccer association registration day at Buninyong School from 11am until 2pm tomorrow (Saturday, February 5) or at their club’s registration day.
