Tullulah Ambrose-Kassis was just one of many star performers at Dubbo’s 35th annual New Year Open Athletics Carnival held on the weekend.
More than 200 athletes from clubs all over New South Wales were in the city for the meet with track and field events for all ages.
Tullulah, a member of the Dubbo RSL Little As Club, had a big commitment in events and was in the middle of a tense under-11s high jump event when her opposition came and went. Only two girls in the field of five were left in when the bar was raised to 1.10m - Tullulah and her RSL club-mate Chelsea Peacock.
Unfortunately the diminutive Chelsea found that mark beyond her leaving Chelsea the winner, but still able to attempt more height.
Tullulah sailed over the bar at 1.14m and 1.18m before she had her first miss at 1.20m. However she regained her composure to extend the bar to firstly 1.22m and 1.24m but then had three failures at 1.26m.
While the quality of Tullulah’s performance was noteworthy, the 2005 record of 1.45m set by J Stein from Warradle was never really threatened.
High jump judge Peter Bass, who is also chairman of the Dubbo Combined Athletics organising committee, said the mateship between the athletes was one of the highlights of the competition.
“This high jump event is a prime example,” Mr Bass said.
“One of the girls missed a jump and she’s encouraged by the others who just now said for her take her time and relax.
“That’s what happens.”
