Dubbo is ahead of the pack regarding this issue as a curfew of 1am has already been in place for several years.
The licensee at Amaroo Hotel Nelson Kelly said the new curfew would have no effect on local businesses.
“It has been in Dubbo for a few years so it doesn’t affect us at all,” he said.
Mr Kelly says an earlier curfew would be welcome by late-night traders as those who enter premises after 12am are usually intoxicated.
“I’d support bringing in a 12am curfew,” said Mr Kelly.
“I have talked to other late traders and the police, and they think it is a good idea also.”
Mr Kelly said that with any curfew the key to its effectiveness was the same time
being used by all late-night traders.
The results of a study undertaken by Newcastle University focusing on the nightlife of the central business district in Newcastle began the fight for a unified curfew in NSW.
The study showed a dramatic drop in assaults in an area when curfews were introduced at 3am with a 67 per cent reduction of assaults recorded between 3am and 6am in the Newcastle CBD over the period of the study.
The Last Drinks campaign, which supports the curfew, backed by emergency workers across NSW, is also pushing to make the curfew a reality for the state.
