It took the Dubbo Kangaroos just minutes to show their urge to claim the local Mark Melville Cup, with hooker Brett Moody pushing over the white line not long after kick off to score the first of what was to be 10 tries in their match against Dubbo Rhinos at No.1 Oval on Saturday night.

With the try converted by half-back Damien Tegart, it was obvious the Rhinos were going to be in for a long night with the Roos eventually reigning supreme in the cross-town rivalry 66-12.
The Rhinos were unable to commit to tackles and lacked structure with the ball in hand.
Coach Paul Hausia said while their opponent proved to be too good on the night, his side did what he asked of them to do.
“We had the right attitude, we played rugby right to the end but they were obviously determined to beat us this year,” he said.
“We expected the Roos to come out strong... but we just didn’t expect them to come out as strong as they did.
“We know we can get to the try lines but it is the silly mistakes we are making, the one off pass here and off loads there.”
Despite the win the Roos weren’t flawless, with a number of ruck infringements and loose balls. But it was nothing of great concern to captain Lee Toohey.
“We’ve got seven guys out at the moment so for these guys to come in and fill in the spot was a good effort,” he said.
“The breakdown at the moment is quite a contentious area no matter who’s playing or the quality of the side you’re playing against, so you’ve just got to take it as it comes.”
“We showed that when the forward pack is going forward anything can happen... the quality of the tries, especially scored by the backs today, were fantastic.”
It was not long before their first points that the Roos had another crack, with No.8 Gus Laurie collecting the ball on the fringes to cross and put the Roos even further in the lead, with Tegart’s successful conversion .
Man of the match, Tegart created many an opportunity for both himself and his side, delivering the ball for Todd Stewart to make a break, Tegart recollected to produce the Roos third converted try before Sam Wheeler crossed for the Roos’ fourth.
But Rhinos captain Mick Burns showed his determination. With an intercept attempt coming off nicely, he made a breaking run to give his side some points on the board. Josh Taylor missed the kick to give the Roos a 33-5 lead into the break.
The second half started off similar to the first with Tegart again producing the play to get him over for the second time.
But the Rhinos showed their mind was still there, when a long ball across to fullback Will Boney saw him fly through a hole, to collect another five points. Taylor converted this time and the Rhinos had 12.
The Roos went on to produce a hat-trick of tries in just 10 minutes, with centre Lars Newman, Laurie and winger Scott Amos all crossing.
Although their victory was a given they kept pushing for the points, as second rower James Skuthorp pushed his way over and the game was signed, sealed and delivered by Tegart’s boot.
